Terms of service
Last updated 25 September 2026
About these terms
ShutterCalls (shuttercalls.com) is operated by North Star Media Pty Ltd (“we”, “us”). These terms apply whenever you use the site. By creating an account you agree to them and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use ShutterCalls.
The service
ShutterCalls is a searchable directory of photography residencies, grants, awards, open calls and jobs. A free account lets you search and see a limited number of results. A Premium membership unlocks full listing details, application links and saved lists.
We may add, change or remove features from time to time. If a change substantially reduces what Premium members are paying for, we'll tell you before it takes effect.
Listings are a guide, not a guarantee
We research listings carefully, but opportunities are run by independent organisations and can change without notice. Deadlines, fees, eligibility and status (such as “Open” or “Closing soon”) may be estimates, particularly for awards that recur each year. Job listings come partly from third-party feeds, including Adzuna.
Always confirm the details with the organiser before you apply or pay any fee. We aren't a party to any application, and we aren't responsible for an organiser's decisions, for the content of external websites, or for fees you pay to them.
Your account
- You must be at least 16 and give us accurate information.
- Accounts are for one person. Keep your sign-in details private, and don't share, sell or transfer your account.
- You're responsible for activity on your account. Tell us straight away at hello@shuttercalls.com if you think someone else has used it.
Premium membership and billing
- Premium is a subscription billed in advance, monthly or yearly, at the price shown when you subscribe. Payments are processed by Stripe.
- Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel.
- You can cancel at any time from your account page. Premium access continues until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again.
- Payments are non-refundable, including for partly used periods, except where the law requires otherwise (see “Your rights under Australian Consumer Law” below).
- If we change the price, we'll email you at least 30 days before your next renewal. The new price applies from that renewal, and you can cancel before then.
- If a payment fails, your access may be paused until your payment details are updated.
Fair use
ShutterCalls is for your personal use in finding opportunities for your own practice or career. You must not:
- scrape, crawl, copy in bulk or systematically download listings, whether by hand or with bots, scripts or other automated tools;
- republish, resell or redistribute listing content, or use it to build a competing directory, database or dataset (including for training AI models);
- get around access restrictions, rate limits, CAPTCHAs or other security measures;
- use the service unlawfully, or in a way that harms the site or other members.
Sharing the occasional individual listing with a friend or colleague is fine.
Our content
The ShutterCalls directory is our work: how we select, research, write, organise and present the listings, plus the site's design and branding. We own it, or have permission to use it, and it's protected by copyright and database rights. Facts about an opportunity belong to no one, but our compilation of them is ours. Organisers' names and trade marks belong to them.
Suspension and termination
You can close your account at any time by emailing us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, particularly the fair-use rules. Where we reasonably can, we'll warn you first. If we close a Premium account for reasons other than a breach of these terms, we'll refund the unused part of your current period.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law, and you may have similar rights under the consumer laws of your own country. Nothing in these terms limits those rights. If a guarantee is breached and the failure isn't a major one, where the law allows we limit our liability to supplying the service again or refunding what you paid for it.
Limits of our liability
The service is provided “as is”. We don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any listing is complete, current or accurate. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, including a missed deadline or opportunity, lost income, or fees you paid to third parties. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change is significant, we'll update the date above and let members know by email or on the site at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you keep using ShutterCalls after that, you accept the new terms. If you don't agree, you can cancel before they take effect.
Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the laws of Western Australia, Australia, and the courts there have jurisdiction. Any other rights you have under the law of the country you live in still apply. Questions? Email hello@shuttercalls.com.
